The must do skin care routine

The must do skin care routine

With numerous products and unending products online and available over the counter, its sometimes overwhelming to decide “where do I start” ?

Well for a well-rounded skin care routine certain products are an absolute must:

  1. Gentle cleanser for all skin types – It’s a good idea to start off with a non drying, hydrating, cleanser which does not disrupt or strip your skin off its natural lipids. It’s a good idea to look for ingredients such as simple glycerin, sodium hyaluronate and lactic acid for their hydrating effects, allantoin which is soothing and niacinamide for sebum or oil regulation.

If you have excessively oily skin you may want to consider an Alpha hydroxy acid or beta hydroxy addition to your cleanser, albeit in low concentrations to start with.

Look for low surfactant products and for naturally derived surfactants such as Sodium Cocoyl Apple Amino Acids, which is derived from apples and decreases the surface tension of other ingredients, helps in foaming, cleaning with the advantage of not being to harsh on the skin.

  1. A good, broad-spectrum sunscreen – a broad spectrum sunscreen is one which covers UVA, UVB and the visible light part of the spectrum. A sunscreen with a PA+++, UVA sign, SPF of 30 or more along with a critical wavelength of 371nm (or more figures as broad spectrum. Moreover, if your sunscreen has barrier restoring properties voila ! Look for sunscreens which have ceramides (ceramide 3NP) alongside new broad spectrum filters as these allow your sunscreen to not be absorbed in to your blood stream due to the bigger molecular size, are very stable and have the added advantage of not having any endocrine or carcinogenic effects. (Tinosorb S, Uvinul A plus) More on this in another article.
  2. Moisturizer – Everyone and I mean everyone needs a moisturizer one time or another, be it simple oils or classy, high end nourishing night creams (yes many of them are simple moisturizers). A good moisturizer is essentially one that works for your skin, as typically there is no “one size fits all” approach here. Dry skin needs a creamy base, whereas an oily skin needs something more water based or light and aqueous, while a combination skin may get away with a light gel cream, a lotion or a slightly heavier cream as well.  The most efficacious moisturizers contain both occlusive and humectant ingredients. The sum of these skin effects results in an environment optimal for barrier repair. Further, look for products with minimal or no fragrance, barrier restoring properties and those which claim a non-comedogenic (they don’t cause pimples) potential.

Once you’re good with the above you may want to consult your dermatologist for next steps depending upon your skin, age and requirement.
