What is silymarin?

Silymarin is an extract derived from the seeds of the milk thistle plant (silybum marinum) and has been utilised orally and topically in medicine for it various interesting properties.

How does it benefit the skin?

  • Anti Pigmentation – Decreases the transfer of pigment from the melanocyte to the skin cells or the keratinocyte. Improves skin tone.
  • Anti-aging benefits - Silymarin can help reduce the appearance of signs of aging, such as wrinkles and fine lines.
  • Anti acne benefits - Silymarin can help reduce oiliness by minimizing the oxidation of sebum, the skin's natural oils.
  • Anti-Oxidant - Protects from environmental damage caused by free radicals, which can be produced by UV exposure and other environmental factors.

 

Who can use products with silymarin?

Silymarin is typically a very safe ingredient and can be used by mostly all skin types. It is safe to use silymarin even for those with sensitive skin.

Can you pair it with other ingredients

Silymarin can be paired with other ingredients such as:

  • AHA’s and BHA’s or PHA’s for anti-pigment effect and enhancing the tone of the skin
  • Bakuchiol and silymarin – a good combination for enhancing texture and tone
  • Vitamin C and ferulic acid
  • Carnosine

 

Safe in pregnancy and lactation

Silymarin being a plant extract and a natural ingredient is essentially considered safe for use in pregnancy in topical formulations, however one must consult their dermatologist prior to use under these circumstances.

How should I use it?

Twice daily as monotherapy (without any other actives), however, in many formulations including the one by The Face Craft Project, silymarin has been used with various other ingredients, which may require the product to be used once a day at night. The use of silymarin should be supplemented with a broad-spectrum sunscreen.
